Doxford, a perfect wildlife haven
Doxford Cottages are the perfect base for birdwatching and wildlife experiences in Northumberland.
We are situated in an excellent location for visits to the coast, where the highlights are the Farne Islands for puffins (April- Sptember) and a grey seal colony, and the Holy Island mud flats which are a great wintering area for flocks of migratory ducks and geese. A wide range of seabirds, waders and wildfowl can be found here at specific times of the year. Further afield in the Cheviot hills moorland specialities include red and black grouse, raven, peregrine, hen harrier and ring ouzel.
Wildlife that can be seen around the cottages include red squirrels which regularly visit the feeders, otters frequent the lake, early mornings and late evenings are the best times for viewing these and badger, foxes, hare and roe deer are common in the vicinity. The bird feeders attract a large range of birds including tree sparrows, nuthatches and great spotted woodpecker. Look out for hedgehogs hunting on the lawns for slugs in the evenings.
